Diagnosing Problems and Developing Solutions  
In partnership with the Pew Charitable Trusts' Make Voting Work initiative and the JEHT Foundation, the Pew Center on the States has issued a Request for Proposals. Allocating up to $2 million, this RFP focuses on diagnosing how well U.S. elections are run and planning pilot projects testing solutions to be conducted in 2007 and 2008.

Testing the Turnout Hypothesis  
While many advocates of voting-by-mail argue that it will increase voter participation, researchers continue to question this assumption. In a new study, Thad Kousser and Megan Mullin use a "natural experiment" in California to explore this question and find that the effects on turnout are mixed at best.

In this hearing, the Senate Special Committee on Aging explored a variety of unique election administration issues presented by elderly voters.
This report details arguments about the shortcomings of electronic voting machines, focusing on anecdotal information from the 2004 election.
Under the Help America Vote Act, first-time voters are required to show identification when they go to the polls. This new study examines how administrators in six states have chosen to comply with that regulation and recommends best practices for use by other jurisdictions.
The EPC’s preliminary analysis of complaints registered in the Election Incident Reporting System (EIRS) during the 2004 presidential election reveals problems in registration processing, absentee balloting, machine errors, voter suppression or intimidation, and provisional ballots
Research Projects
Electionline.org provides daily news updates on election reform issues, as well as deeper analysis of selected topics, including recent reports on voter registration, recount procedures, and the progress in implementing the Help America Vote Act since 2002.
Part of the Institute for Governmental Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, the Election Administration Research Center (EARC) aims to improve the administration of elections.
This project aims to evaluate the current state of reliability and uniformity of U.S. voting systems; to establish uniform attributes and quantitative guidelines for performance and reliability of voting systems; and to propose specific uniform guidelines and requirements for reliable voting systems
Directed by early voting scholar Paul Gronke and housed at Reed College, the Early Voting Information Center provides news and research on and a state-by-state overview of early voting issues.
As part of its broader research focus on elections, campaign ethics, campaign finance, and the legislative process, the Center for American Politics and Citizenship at the University of Maryland is engaged in research projects on voting technology and ballot design specifically.
