Countdown to Crawford

On January 9, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Crawford v. Marion County Election Board, the controversial Indiana voter ID case. The outcome may have broad implications for voters going to the polls in 2008, and on January 7, the Election Reform Project will host an event previewing and evaluating the arguments in the case before the Court.

Learning Lessons from the Midwest

Because many aspects of election administration in the United States are dictated by the laws of individual states and counties, there are important lessons to be learned from looking closely at other jurisdictions. A new, exhaustive study by researchers at Ohio State examines all aspects of the administration systems of five Midwestern states and makes recommendations for reform on both the micro- and macro-levels. Taking a Look Back at 2006

Election reform scholars nationwide are continually seeking new sources of data that can be used to explore various research questions, and the release of the Election Assistance Commission’s 2006 Election Administration and Voting Survey is likely to prove useful to many. Security Analysis of the Diebold AccuVote-TS Voting Machine (PDF) | SEPTEMBER 2006

This paper presents a complete study of a Diebold AccuVote-TS voting machine. Analysis of the machine shows that it is vulnerable to extremely serious attacks, the mitigation of which require changes to the its hardware and software and the adoption of more rigorous election procedures.
