Poll Workers: The People of Election Day
Nearly two million Americans serve as poll workers each election, and administrators across the country face challenges in recruiting, training, and retaining them. Both electionline.org and the Committee on House Administration have examined the issue, and the EAC has released best practices for use by local officials.

Would More Testing Matter in FL-13?  
Nearly a year has passed, and GAO experts continue to investigate the large number of undervotes cast in last November's election in Florida's 13th Congressional District. A new report concludes that while some completed tests provide assurance that certain components of the machines used functioned correctly, further examination is unlikely to prove with absolute certainty the system was not at fault.

Asking Other Questions About Fraud  
While the Supreme Court prepares to hear a case on voter ID laws--which are supported by some as a way to increase the integrity of the election process--researchers are also exploring whether certain policies create increased opportunities to commit fraud. A new analysis from Demos examines Election Day Registration (EDR) through that lens, concluding that states with EDR do not have more reported allegations of fraud.

Some of HAVA’s provisions faced an early test during the 2004 general election. In a recent study, the U.S. Government Accountability Office explored the law's implementation and the challenges faced by election officials.

After reviewing some specifics of voting processes in the United States and the provisions of the Help America Vote Act, this paper lays out a roadmap for future reseach on electronic voting, with particular emphasis on reliability and access.
As part of a workshop on threats to voting systems, state and local election officials, researchers, lawyers, vendors, and others from the public and private sectors submitted threat analyses of voting systems.
Research Projects
Election Law @ Moritz, run through Moritz College of Law at the Ohio State University, contains both explanation and commentary on a wealth of election reform issues from a legal perspective.
This project aims to evaluate the current state of reliability and uniformity of U.S. voting systems; to establish uniform attributes and quantitative guidelines for performance and reliability of voting systems; and to propose specific uniform guidelines and requirements for reliable voting systems
Electionline.org provides daily news updates on election reform issues, as well as deeper analysis of selected topics, including recent reports on voter registration, recount procedures, and the progress in implementing the Help America Vote Act since 2002.
As part of its broader research focus on elections, campaign ethics, campaign finance, and the legislative process, the Center for American Politics and Citizenship at the University of Maryland is engaged in research projects on voting technology and ballot design specifically.
