| A New Look at Voter ID |

Comments by the head of the Department of Justice's Voting Rights Section are not the only recent news-making contribution to the debate over voter identification laws. In a new report, researchers from the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project examine the issue in depth and conclude that while there is no evidence that ID requirements depress turnout at the aggregate level, they do have a negative effect for certain individual voters. The authors examine the effects of past reforms such as vote by mail and election-day registration as well as the results of the year 2000 primary election in Arizona and determine that the implementation of Internet voting would likely be detrimental to minority representation.
