Voters in 15 states participated in primaries yesterday, marking an earlier-than-ever test for many election administrators in a presidential election year. Electionline.org previewed various challenges that Super Tuesday states were likely to face, and another team of researchers has already mined the New Hampshire primary for potential election reform lessons.

As the first election since 1952 without an incumbent president or vice-president as a candidate, the number of new registrations for this November’s presidential contest is expected to be very high. A new report from Project Vote uses Colorado as a case study to explore a process designed to ease registration for low-income citizens—making forms available at public assistance agencies—and finds that the state has made some progress recently but that room for improvement still exists.

The challenges election administrators face vary depending on the demographics of their jurisdictions. Nearly all state and local officials, however, have to plan to meet the unique needs of elderly voters. Looking towards November, the U.S. Senate’s Special Committee on Aging explored the issues raised by this population, receiving testimony from elected officials, academic experts, and advocates.

In a telephone study of 800 Maryland voters, the state's new voting system received largely favorable ratings on issues of efficiency, reliability, and trustworthiness. Many respondents, however, also displayed a lack of familiarity with concepts like paper trails and voting receipts.
Poll workers are an integral part of ensuring that Election Day runs smoothly, and this study finds that they can also play a major role in shaping voters' confidence in the electoral process.
This analysis explores Election Day Registration (EDR) as a potential threat to voting integrity, concluding that states with EDR have not experienced increased amounts of voter fraud.

Election Law @ Moritz, run through Moritz College of Law at the Ohio State University, contains both explanation and commentary on a wealth of election reform issues from a legal perspective.
Part of the Institute for Governmental Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, the Election Administration Research Center (EARC) aims to improve the administration of elections.
Electionline.org provides daily news updates on election reform issues, as well as deeper analysis of selected topics, including recent reports on voter registration, recount procedures, and the progress in implementing the Help America Vote Act since 2002.
As part of its broader research focus on elections, campaign ethics, campaign finance, and the legislative process, the Center for American Politics and Citizenship at the University of Maryland is engaged in research projects on voting technology and ballot design specifically.
