Progress Reports on Election Reform and Voter Registration

Two reports review the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993 and state-level election reform across the United States. The first report, released by Project Vote, examines the implementation of the NVRA, focusing on registration methods and the progress that has yet to be made. In the second report, from the Center for Democracy and Election Management at American University, researchers review the election process across the United States.

Collaborative Registration: Using the Selective Service as a Model

A case study on the registration process employed by Selective Service officials provides insight into how government agencies can collaborate to create accurate voter registration files. Working with other government agencies, the Selective Service collects contact information for registration-age males and updates it frequently. As a result of its collaboration efforts, its database holds records on 95% of its target population, while keeping its costs low through the use of technology. Read more »


Implementing NVRA: Registration at Public Assistance Agencies

This study highlights the recent success in Missouri of voter registration in public assistance agencies from August 2008 through May 2009, which is mandated in the 1993 National Voter Registration Act. After being found noncompliant with portions of the NVRA by a U.S. District Court in 2008, the state of Missouri reintroduced this method of registration. Over 112,000 Missourians registered to vote in public assistance agencies during this time, a drastic increase over past registration numbers. Read more »
